Fintry Little Tom

Purchased by MCR Quarter Horses 02/17/1983.

Star, Strip & Snip. Left Hind Sock. Dark Spots On Left Hind Coronet. No other markings. 

Tommy was our first stallion. We lucked out there. Don and Irene Woitte sold him to us as a colt. He was one of those horses that always looked good. Just pretty from every angle. His disposition was second to none. We had 6 kids living and working on the ranch. It was essential that he be kind and sensible. He was. He would live up the pasture with his mares. When we had outside mares to breed, all we had to do was rattle the chain on the gate and he would come running from half a mile away. We showed him in western pleasure, halter and horsemanship although he was more suited to reining and working cowhorse. I had never shown a horse before. He stood 14.3 which was rather short for those classes but we almost always placed well. They were large classes. 30 and 40 horses in some of them. Split classes often. He got his ROM easily. He was always a gentleman and had great conformation, attitude and movement. 

We didn't breed a lot of mares but he put his stamp on the babies. They almost always had a really cute head and good straight legs and nice dispositions. He really taught us that a stallion has a lot of influence in a breeding program even for things like disposition and athletic ability. He taught us a lot. When we lost him from an anorism at 16, it was not an easy task to find a replacement. We would still welcome him back. 

Living with a ranch family of limited means out in the boonies didn't get Tom the promotion and recognition that he deserved but we are sure grateful to have had him in our herd. He produced a very competitive reiner, barrel racer and cattle penner as far as successful competitive offspring goes. Most everyone who had one of his daughters in their broodmare herd told us his mares were the best broodmares they had. Some of the local cowboys who ride the big pastures came back year after year to get another one. Many became the trusted steed that their owners could take on trail rides one weekend and an open show the next.
