AQHA Professional Horseman Al Dunning featured legendary trainer Tom Lyons in his column in the June-July issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal. Tom, who has won approximately $2.7 million in National Cutting Horse Association competition, rode a number of Doc Bar-bred horses.
“My favorite horse was and still is Doc’s Oak!” Tom says. “He was so kind and easy to train, so athletic and so natural that from the beginning, he did things that the other horses could not do. I always said, ‘Wow,’ when I finished working him because he was so athletic and kind. His heart was big, and he never gave up trying for his rider.”
At age 5, Doc’s Oak was the youngest horse to go in the NCHA Hall of Fame, the youngest horse since the great Poco Lena to win Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association horse of the year (also at age 5), the only horse to ever make the finals at both the National Reined Cow Horse Association and the NCHA futurities, the sire of NRCHA and NRHA futurity champions, and was listed among the top 50 AQHA sires as of 1992.
“My favorite moments of my career would be the NCHA and NRCHA futurity championships,” Tom says. “It does not get any better than that for me!”
In the breeding barn, Doc’s Oak sired 523 performers, according to Equi-Stat and the average earnings for a Doc’s Oak foal stands at more than $20,000. Together the offspring have earned more than $10 million in the cutting, reined cow horse and reining arenas.
One of the most influential of Doc’s Oak’s progeny was the stallion Docs Stylish Oak, who has so far sired the earners of more than $9 million. * Photo by Cam Essick.
A 1984 stallion out of Docs Stylish (by Doc’s Prescription), Docs Stylish Oak sired the winners of more than $9.4 million and is the father of influential broodmare Stylish Play Lena.
Herself the winner of $289,624, Stylish Play Lena is the mother of the late Equi-Stat Elite $4 Million Sire Hottish ($301,200, by Spots Hot) and NCHA Horse of the Year Smooth Talkin Style ($305,284, by Smooth As A Cat). So far, the great mare has foaled the winners of more than $2 million, a list of progeny that also includes another sire, Halreycious, a son of Dual Rey who has sired the winners of more than $3.3 million.
Doc’s Oak also sired winners in halter and in barrel racing, where his name also is found in the pedigree of one of the most successful barrel horses of recent times, Lisa Lockhart’s An Oakie With Cash, aka “Louie.”
Doc’s Oak’s lineage continues to be appreciated in the performance horse community for its’ versatility and good nature.

The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Hall of Fame Inductee was nimble on his feet and held his tail straight out behind him as he cut. Doc’s Oak completed solely with Tom Lyons, the only man to win the NCHA Futurity, Derby, Super Stakes, NCHA Open World Championship and National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity.
